International Union for Conservation of Nature - Otter Specialist Group in collaboration with National Centre for Biological Sciences is organising a South Asia workshop to address critical gaps in otter research and conservation.
Some of the objectives of this regional workshop are to -
Some of the objectives of this regional workshop are to -
- Train early-career biologists and otter researchers, to enhance their survey, monitoring and law enforcement assistance skills, as well as to increase overall otter conservation efforts
- Increase understanding of hunting and trade dynamics. Provide TRAFFIC intelligence reports on illegal wildlife trade to relevant law enforcement authorities
- Discuss case-studies from across the region to understand decline of otters, and threats to their survival
- Understand the extent of conflict with otters and ways of mitigating these. Also, to involve local fishing communities in conservation efforts
- Develop an action plan to guide research and conservation of the Asian otters
